Survivor - Thanks To Planning!
Well, National FFA Week 2021 is in the books and as a student teacher, I made it! The week was a blast with activities ranging from Food Insecurity and Dairy Days to Community Service Day. I believe that this week gave me great insight into what planning major FFA events will look like as a future advisor. For this blog, I wanted to talk about some of my experiences with planned out activities this week, what went well, and what could have gone better.
Might as well start with the positives, the students had a great week that was a change of pace from the rest of school. We took a week to focus on topics that the officer team had chosen to discuss and participate in throughout the week. When it comes to planning here is what went well:
- Every day had a theme and a lesson to learn behind it
- The students were engaged
- All of the needed materials were obtained in plenty of time
- THE STUDENTS HELPED SET UP AND CLEAN UP EVERYTHING
- THE STUDENTS DECIDED THE DAILY TOPICS
- THE STUDENTS PLANNED OUT ANIMAL DAY AND THE LUNCHEON
Notice what was different about those last three points, the students. As FFA advisors, we have things that have to come from us logistically, but when it comes the FFA being a student lead organization, so often we forget that it is a STUDENT LEAD organization. I think that it is important to say that I was there to assist in all planning aspects and to address any needs or concerns, but it was a week to celebrate the FFA members.
Here is what I wish could've gone better. For Career Day, I lost two speakers out of the seven last minuet. One to understaffing scheduling at work and one to illness. I was able to find a replacement for one of them thanks to help from my amazing co-operating teacher, but had to improvise and do an activity in place of the other speaker with the leadership class. As my cohort member Mr. Thomas Gabel is always quick to remind me: Improvise, Adapt, Overcome. That's what being a good planner is, having a plan and being flexible enough to work through it when something does not go right.
Of course I always end with the highlight of the week and this week is the students of Wilmington who brought their animals in for Animal Day to share with students from the elementary.
Catch Ya On The Flip Side,
Dylan
It sounds like you had a great week with some good lessons learned, Dylan! Keep up the good work!
