New Faces In New Places

It was a really interesting time visiting a school virtually. Luckily, I had been in Wilmington Area once before for a regional competition back when I was in high school! Mrs. McKelvey was very happy to show me around their facilities. The classroom is equipped with lab tables and chairs that are not attached to the desks. This allows for students to gather and move around the room in a typical time without social distancing. The set up of the desks enables them to be moved and rearranged for group activities which is an added bonus.

One thing at Wilmington that I would be very happy to get some experience with is the aquaculture tank that will soon be the home to some Koi fish arriving at the end of April. The tank is equipped with a 4'x8' growing bed that would be an amazing tool to have to compare aquaculture growth to growth in a traditional greenhouse. The greenhouse is a 25'x40', which is huge compared to the one that was 15'x6' at Mohawk. I am looking forward to have the chance to develop skills in greenhouse management which is something that I have no experience with.

The shop at Wilmington is an excellent workspace. There are two large square work tables that students can complete their projects on. The shop also contains four welding stations. There is a large open floor space that allows students to work on non-traditional projects. For example, while I was touring, the students had been working on a bleacher project.

It was really interesting to see how different this place was compared to the high school that I went to. I think the facilities would allow me to grow in areas that I have very little experience in. Mrs. McKelvey and myself get along very well and I feel she would be a great possible cooperating teacher for me to learn from. I know that Wilmington may not be where I end up for my placement but this experience has given me enthusiasm for what is yet to come!

  1. Hi Dylan - Happy placement interview week! I'm sure you did great. This bleacher project is fantastic and I'm sure is a great recruitment strategy for the ag program at sporting events! Best of luck!
