Oh, The Places You'll Go!

I have always seemed to fit in wherever I have ended up in life, but this is a new kind of challenge. I know that wherever I go, I want to have something different from what I was used to at Mohawk FFA. For most of my career in Mohawk FFA, I was in a two-teacher program that was very heavy on agricultural mechanics, welding, masonry, and small gas engines. I really found a passion in those classes which has led me to the point in my life that I am in today. While I grew up on a beef and crop farm, I was never really interested in taking animal science or plant science classes in high school.

What I am looking for in a cooperating center is a place that will educate me on how to teach subjects that I have never experienced in a high school setting before. I would love to go to a single teacher program, to see how one person can do the work that I was used to watching two individuals do. I also would like a female cooperating teacher since both of my Ag Educators were male. I think the combination of a female led, single teacher program will give me new insights to Agricultural Education and make me a better educator when it is my turn.

I want this program to be very heavy on Animal Science. The main reason that I want a heavy animal science program is due to my background in the meat industry. Since I have begun my Ag Ed journey, I have wanted to be able to develop some curriculum that would give students an interest in meat science. I know that many agriculture teachers push trade jobs like welding or electricians because those are fields that are dying for employees, but the meat industry is no different. While I understand that there may not be many that would be interested in a career in the meat industry, you never know until you get to try it. I would also like to be in a program that has a greenhouse that is bigger than the 10ft. x 6ft. one that we had at Mohawk, so that I can see how to run a horticulture or plant science program while using that greenhouse to its maximum potential.

I know that the best way to prepare myself for a future career in education is to be exposed to as many different things as possible. That is why I think a program like what I described above would be very beneficial to me. I basically had a conversation with myself about what I did not experience during my time in high school ag and came to this conclusion. I know that I will give my all to wherever I am placed, and I cannot wait for this new experience.
